11:47 pm - I'm pretty certain there a lot of tangents in this post that made more sense in my head
That ended up being surprisingly interesting for a day in which I was just expected to go into the city and then back home after lunch.

Anyways, someone on melbournemaniac was selling a whole bunch of manga second-hand very cheap, so I went and bought some stuff. Which meant I ended up going into the CBD to pick up a pile of volumes of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Yays for pretty CLAMP art!

Of course on the way in it was really freaking windy- when I was crossing the road, my poor hat got blown off and almost got run over. Fortunately the car stopped before that unmitigated tragedy could occur. I mean, that was the original hat. Luck was obviously on my side today.

But yeah, picked up my bag o'manga, had Hare Krishna food for lunch (Speaking of which, I have to wonder just how old I actually look. No-one ever asks for ID when I buy drinks, but people still assume I am a student just by looking at me.), bought a few bits and pieces that I missed the other day when things closed.

Oh, and got a couple of cheap summer dresses from the Designer Incubator. I figure I'll probably need them over in the states with their heat-wave or whatever.

And then I got a haircut. Which I probably didn't desperately need just yet, but I think I want my hair to look nice when I'm travelling

And now I am tired. How can just wandering around the city buying things be so tiring?

Here, have some Doctor Who wank as a refreshing treat.

Incidentally, does anyone remember an article a while back - not on LJ, but linked to me from LJ (maybe Firefox News?) - that was all about how two people can watch the same show but be seeing, basically, two entirely different shows? Something like that, anyway. It's not for anything serious, I just kind of want to reread it, and maybe keep the link handy.

ROFL. Sounds so absurd it has to be hilarious. And how do you control a fandom? That's like saying you can control a crazed howler monkey eating your face.

I think I need a brief break watching shows. Besides, I keep leaving Chapter 10 of IHTW open for days on end and barely getting anywhere with it as a result.

Lol, I get that feeling all the time. Though I've actually been suffering from the reverse these past few days, in having dealt too much with actual people. Nothing weird actually happened to me directly, but when you end up in a situation where glass is getting thrown at people, you tend to want to relax afterward. Or in my case, for several days afterward.

Doctor Who is particularly special in this regard, since it's been around forever (coming up 48 years). But yeah, that was kind of hilarious to us, too.

Got any thoughts on that characters/stories/plot-arcs or whatever?

Get cracking on that fic, dammit! *pointed look*

That sounds less than good, actually. You need to find better people to interact with.

I suppose the older the fandom, the more likely it is to have massive wank.

For Doctor Who? Hmm... while the Eleventh isn't as totally awesome as the Tenth Doctor, I do like him, and it is interesting to see a change of pace. As for anything else, it hasn't had quite enough time to sink in yet for me to form a true opinion on anything.

I'm trying! *whines* But it's so hot outside, my brain just melts... And it honestly seems like every time I try to sit down I get distracted.

Well, the person who pretty much triggered the situation is literally my oldest friend, from all the way in preschool, so I make allowances and prepare myself for some crazy times when I'm with him. Generally my nights don't end with screaming, cursing, and violence, lol.

Yes. The wank has momentum.

Well, let me know your opinions if you decide on them! For all I've stepped back, I was invested for so long that the curiosity about new opinions still lingers.

Oh yeah, that heat I will be experiencing in... two days? Eeek.

...Well, that sounds like a dramatic night out.

Sounds about right. Newer fandoms are always nice in that regard- no one's had time to start drama, make enemies. Once you open Pandora's box, per se, there's nowhere to go but down.

Oh, and I can safely conclude that Simm's Master is freaking amazing. I think I need to go back and watch those episodes again for how much I loved his performance. Definitely one of my favorite villains ever.

It just makes me... lethargic. Like I just want to do things that involve minimal brainpower.

Breakups tend to up the drama to eleven, IMO. Particularly nasty ones.

The more canon, the more there is to fight over. Though your mixed metaphors there have lead to some odd mental images.

Yes, he really is an entertaining baddy - and there's some really interesting character stuff going on with him and the Doctor. And those two may have started my personal thing for ships about childhood BFFs who become FoeYaytastic enemies who can't quite get themselves to stop caring about each other.

No air con at your place?

Ah. I see.

lol, I'm on a bit of a weird metaphor kick right now.

I think childhood friends who grow into archenemies are just utterly delicious plot wise. You can do so much with them- there's so much bitterness and anger, but you can also get away with light-hearted moments where their old relationship kindles back up for a moment.

My dad's cheap, so we only turn it on every so often. Plus it's all the way downstairs.

Branch out! Create something new and exciting!

Well, yes, all that is true. It's also why they are so much fun to ship, since the relationships tend to be canonically full of love-hate ambiguity; they are already uncertain of what their relationship is, so you can just push that a little further.

Though to be fair, the Doctor Who head writer at the time also said the Doctor and Master are soulmates and that the Doctor does love the Master, so...

How utterly tragic for you.

I'll do it when I'm not so tired, or it's not so hot. :)

(I did manage a around 2000 words or so on IHTW though, so I suppose I'm starting to make progress again on that, at least)

That's definitely true. And I could easily see the Doctor and Master in some kind of twisted true love. That first phone conversation between them was definitely unusually charged with tension, lol. "I like it when you use my name" indeed.

My dad being frugal helps, really, as everyone else in the house spends money like crazy. I'm only a little less bad than my mom and sister.

Get a drink with ice. Lots and lots of ice.

(Huzzah! \o/)

They were an actual couple in a non-canon webcast. But yeah, that was the scene when people went from, "So this might be a bit slashy" to "HOLY SUBTEXT, BATMAN!" There's a reason for my icon.

LOL, I seem to alternate between spending heaps, and spending, like nothing at all.

Ice machine is broken, so acquiring ice requires effort I usually don't bother with, lol. (Yes, my dad is too cheap to fix that too)

Yeah, when I start picking up on that subtext, I know for sure it's there.

It's sort of similar to me- but considering any job I have pays very little, it means that spending a lot generally overcomes what little I've saved.

...Don't you have a freezer? I mean all you need is a freezer, and a tray for the ice cubes.

Yeah, there's some particularly blatant (sub)text there. It's probably worth mentioning Doctor Who has rather sizable gay fanbase. And for the record, Torchwood has canon gay couples.

Yeah, that doesn't exactly help.

Oh yeah we do, but usually what ice trays we have get used up quick and no one bothers refilling them. We're trying to get better at it, but it's not easy, lol.

I've heard that, yes. I suppose that helps Torchwood somewhat, really, having a sizeable gay fanbase from its parent fandom.

It helps that the Exec Producer who brought Doctor Who back and created Torchwood is the same guy who created Queer As Folk.

I didn't see it coming, though - I was one of the people who started an LJ comm for this character we thought had an interesting cast description. He ended up being the main characters love interest and fan favourite with some really batshit fans. Yeah, that was interesting.

Huh. Didn't know that, lol.

Ianto, was it? He looks pretty interesting.

Ianto, that's right. They way I heard it, he wasn't even intended to last the whole season. But they liked what he did, so he was made a recurring character. And he became popular with the fans, so he was made a main character (and love interest). And then his fanbase got huge, and he was made into one of the central characters.

Then there was the miniseries, and the fandom imploded.
